Before you even begin looking for a house, ensure your credit history is as clean as possible.
That means taking care of any outstanding debts. You might want to request a copy of your credit bureau file to ensure it is accurate.
Please refer to the section on borrowing basics in this guide for phone numbers and online addresses of the three major credit bureaus.
Next, you may want to find a good real estate agent who understands your interests and can help you throughout the buying process. Ask
friends for referrals or look in your local newspaper for agents who work in the area where you want to buy. Some real estate agents
typically represent the seller. So you may want to find a buyer's agent to represent you.
You may also need a lawyer, as there is a great deal of legal work involved in buying a house - including reviewing the purchase contract
and reviewing the past ownership of the property. While on the topic of lawyers, be sure to ask up
front about your legal fees. These will be due at the time of your house closing.
